In the highly anticipated sixth and final episode of Citadel Season 1, viewers were treated to a resolution of the intricate web surrounding a rogue spy, although it left much to be desired. Titled ‘Secrets In Night Need Early Rain,’ this episode not only tied up loose ends but also laid the foundation for an exciting Season 2.
The previous episode concluded with a shocking revelation that Nadia (played by Priyanka Chopra) had given birth to a child, Asha, with Mason (Richard Madden). This revelation thrust Nadia into the spotlight as the prime suspect responsible for the downfall of Citadel.
Moments after the reveal, Nadia, Mason, and their Citadel comrade, Carter Spence (Osy Ikhile), find themselves cornered by Dahlia Archer’s (Lesley Manville) henchmen, who have kidnapped their eight-year-old daughter, Asha. Desperate to save their child, Nadia and Mason agree to help Dahlia steal the cores of Russian nuclear warheads. However, the mission takes an unexpected turn.
After successfully procuring the missile cores, Nadia and Mason travel to Valencia in a daring attempt to rescue Asha. With Carter positioned as a sniper, Nadia and Mason enter the exchange with Dahlia. However, they encounter an obstacle—Mason’s memory loss prevents him from unlocking the cores. In a twist of fate, Carter takes a decisive shot, saving Asha as she falls from the building into Mason’s arms.
With Asha safely rescued, the reunited spies return to the dilapidated Citadel headquarters, where the rest of the characters await. Here, a surprising turn of events occurs when Carter discovers an injection containing a backup of Mason’s memories. As Mason receives the jab, his memories flood back, revealing a disturbing truth—he was the mole all along. The revelation, however, fails to have the intended impact as the reasons behind Mason’s betrayal seem absurd. Similarly, the revelation that Dahlia is Mason’s mother falls flat.
Although the final episode wraps up the story in a tidy manner, it falls short of the expectations it had raised. Despite its 40-minute runtime, the episode feels lengthy, with little to offer beyond predictable revelations.
Looking ahead, Season 2 is expected to delve into Mason’s quest to undo his involvement in Citadel’s downfall while Dahlia remains on the run from Manticore. Additionally, viewers eagerly anticipate the fate of Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci), last seen in captivity and subjected to Dahlia’s torture. Furthermore, the betrayed Nadia faces an uncertain future, having lost the man she loved.
As fans eagerly await the next installment, Citadel Season 1 leaves them with lingering questions and a sense of anticipation for the twists and turns to come.
